The Water Cycle and More!

During English lessons, the boys planned a newspaper report all about deforestation. Grammar lessons focused on apostrophes for possession and Maths saw the boys further their understanding of division, by completing the inverse operations to check their answers.

For our Art this week, the boys studied William Morris’ artwork and had a go at designing their own wallpaper which focused on repeated patterns, based on the natural world.

The boys delved deeper into the life of Queen Victoria during their History lessons, they discussed where she lived, what her role as a queen was and what her family life was like.

The focus during Geography lessons, was to develop their understanding of the Water Cycle. The boys drew comprehensive diagrams and explained what key words such as precipitation, condensation, evaporation and transpiration mean. See if your son can explain the processes that occur in the water cycle.

To end the week, the boys applied their map skills to their Welly Time lesson. They designed a map to take them from the school to the playing fields at Green Meadow. Their maps were both detailed and accurate. They were also effective in taking the boys from school to their desired destination.

Investigating different materials

This week, in 2W, the boys wrote acrostic poems based on the rainforest. They applied their understanding of alliteration, personification and adjectives to produce exciting and creative poems.

During History lessons, the boys learnt about the Tudor period. They analysed a Tudor family tree to further their understanding of how Elizabeth I became queen. The lesson then saw the boys furthering their knowledge of what life was like during the Tudor period, learning about Tudor laws, farming, education and clothes.

We looked at the different layers of vegetation in rainforests during our Geography lessons. The boys were able to identify and name the different layers and list the various types of plants and animals that would live in each strata.

For Maths, we have continued our work on division. The boys focused on dividing by 2, 5 and 10. By the end of the week, they had begun to apply this understanding to longer word problems.

The most exciting part of our week was our Science lessons. The boys planned and carried out an investigation based on materials. They tested different plastic bags to decipher which bag was made from the strongest material and could therefore carry the greatest weight. Prior to conducting the experiment, the boys outlined the materials required, wrote out how the experiment would be carried out and made predictions. They then put 10kg in each bag and timed how long each bag could last without breaking or ripping. During the investigation the boys discussed what a fair test is and the importance of changing just one variable. Finally, they recorded their results in a table and wrote out detailed conclusions! Ask your son which bag was the strongest!

Rainforests!

The boys have settled back into the term well and have had another brilliant week!

During their Geography lessons, the boys learnt about different rainforests. They used a world map to identify the equator, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. They then located different rainforests and discussed the features of a rainforest.  Following on from this, the boys wrote a piece of descriptive writing about the rainforest. They used their senses to think about what they would see, hear, smell and touch. During Grammar lessons, the focus was on adverbs. It has been excellent to see that this understanding has been applied to their writing.

For our science this week, we have started a new topic on materials. The boys discussed which materials are natural and which are manufactured, they then thought about the properties of different materials and how this impacts their use.

During our Maths lessons, we have been working on division and for our History lessons, the boys have been learning about what a monarch is and where they would live.

The boys also thoroughly enjoyed their Art lesson this week, where they designed parrots using tissue paper, as you can see, they are all extremely vibrant and creative!
