The Bee Musical!

The boys wowed their audience on Wednesday with their tremendous performance of ‘The Bee Musical’. We are immensely proud of the boys’ effort to learn their lines, sing their hearts out and perform with such confidence. It was a delightful way to mark the boys’ end of their three years in the Pre-prep, the progress that they have all made is commendable.

During our Science lesson, the boys took a trip to our school pond! They thoroughly enjoyed going on a minibeast hunt to identify different minibeasts and their habitats. The boys were able to further their understanding of different organisms and the optimum conditions required to sustain life forms.

Maths lessons have seen the boys continue their work on 2D shapes. Grammar lessons have focused on reviewing the content covered thus far. The boys were able to identify the appropriate punctuation for different sentences, write commands, write the plural of different words and use prefixes.

The boys learnt all about the traditions of the Olympic Games during History and designed pictograms to represent weather patterns in their Geography lesson. They were able to use pictograms to compare the weather in two different locations and could explain how the weather varies inland and in coastal areas.

It has been another week of celebrating the boys many successes, congratulations to all the boys of 2W!

Hitting the right note!

This week, in Year 2, the boys have enjoyed reading ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’. The focus during lessons was on being able to retrieve and infer information from a text.

For our Maths lessons, the boys have continued their work on 2D shapes. They were able to identify the number of sides on a 2D shape, count the vertices in a polygon and have begun to identify lines of symmetry.

During Science lessons, the boys have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about bees! They demonstrated an excellent understanding of why pollination is important, how it occurs and were able to name different minibeasts that are pollinators. The boys then utilised this information to produce a poster detailing how local environments can be made bee-friendly. Ask you son to explain the different strategies that can be put into place!

History saw the boys begin their new topic on the Olympics! They were able to investigate what the Olympic Games are and how they began. For our Geography lessons the boys identified the difference between seasonal and daily weather patterns. They then constructed a key to represent the different types of weather.

A huge congratulations to all of the boys in Year 2 for their fantastic Recorder Recital. The boys demonstrated their musicality and played beautifully – superb work boys!

Metamorphosis

Year 2 started the week by having a delicious breakfast in the classroom to mark Mental Health Week.

Maths saw the boys continue their work on money. They tackled word problems which focused on using the correct coins or notes to make a total amount and finding the correct change.

During English lessons, the boys enthusiastically took on the challenge of writing a story called ‘The Voyage’. They used their understanding of the structure of a story mountain to construct five paragraphs about a pirate’s voyage!  A variety of sentence starters and effective adjectives were used to make their stories engaging and interesting to read. The stories were extremely impressive and full of excitement!

For our Science lesson, we have been learning about seed dispersal. Ask your son if he can remember the five ways that plants disperse their seeds in order to reproduce new plants!

The boys learnt all about tornadoes during their Geography lesson, they were able to label the different parts of a tornado, explain how they form and elaborate on the conditions that are required for a tornado to occur. During History, the boys learnt about the record-breaking journey of Ellen MacArthur. They then made comparisons between Ellen MacArthur and Christopher Columbus, a previous explorer that they have learnt about.

A very exciting part of out week was when our caterpillars hatched! For the past few weeks, we have had caterpillars in the classroom and the boys have taken great pleasure in checking how they have developed each day. The boys finally said goodbye to the now butterflies, on Friday afternoon, when they were released.

Coronation Party!

Great fun was had by all in 2W this week!

The boys took part in a Perform Drama workshop based on weather around the world. The workshop focused on identifying seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK, comparing weather in hot and cold countries, as well as, discussing how weather changes in relation to its distance to the equator. It was an extremely active and informative session which the boys thoroughly enjoyed taking part in!

During Science lessons, the boys conducted an experiment to ascertain what the optimum conditions are for plant growth. The lesson saw the boys learning about what is required for a plant to germinate, grow and thrive. They planted cress seeds in different conditions to see which factors will have the greatest impact. For example, two pots were placed by the window so that they had direct access to sunlight, whereas two were placed in a cupboard. We also ensured that two of the pots had water and two did not. We look forward to checking our cress next week to conclude how sunlight, temperature and water impact growth.

Our Maths lessons this week focused on money. The boys have been able to identify different coins and notes, make varying totals and provide the correct change when buying different items. During History lessons, we have continued our work on ‘Explorers’. The boys learnt about life in space and wrote about a typical day onboard the International Space Station (ISS). It has been wonderful to see the boys’ enthusiasm towards this topic and the effort and care that they have taken with their homework. Keep up the excellent work boys!

Maths lessons saw the boys learning about temperature. They used a thermometer to measure different temperatures, compared different temperatures and completed a mind challenge which looked at temperatures in different countries!

On Wednesday, we had a visit from ZooLab. The boys learnt about different species and their habitats, they also had great fun holding the different animals. As you can see, the boys were very brave!

For our History this week, the boys learnt about how cars have changed over time and who the German engineer Karl Benz was.

To end the week, we were treated to an Easter egg hunt with Mario!

Investigating Friction

2W enjoyed exploring what friction is during Science lessons. They investigated how different surfaces would impact the speed of a toy car. The focus was on ensuring that the boys conducted a fair test. They also looked at how they could slow a car down by changing the gradient of the ramp. The lesson saw the boys develop key skills, such as making predictions, changing just one variable to ensure a fair test and using data to reach conclusions.

During English lessons, the boys retold the story of ‘Anancy and Mr. Dry-Bone’. They wrote their own versions of the story and carefully considered how they could add more detail to it. Grammar lessons saw the boys further their understanding of suffixes and how the ending of a word can change its meaning.

For our History lesson this week, the boys learnt who George Stephenson was and the impact that the invention of the first steam locomotive had on people’s lives. Our Geography lesson focused on applying the boys’ knowledge of Jamaica to produce an informative poster, detailing the main attractions in Jamaica.

Towards the end of the week, the boys painted their clay models during Art lessons. The detail and accuracy that the boys used when painting really brought their minibeasts alive!

Celebrating World Book Day

This week, in 2W, the boys have had an extremely exciting week! English lessons have focused on writing in different genres. To start the week, the boys wrote their own poems based on the book ‘Creepy Crawly Calypso’.  The latter part of the week saw the boys write informal letters to a fictional character from our class text.

During Science lessons, the boys took great pleasure in investigating how forces can alter things. They identified different push and pull forces and discussed what friction is. Maths saw the boys completing problem solving activities based on length. They had great fun measuring different items in the classroom and then completing word problems and a mind challenge!

For our Geography lessons, the boys have continued to use atlases to locate different islands. They then created a fact file on Jamaica and filled out a Venn diagram to compare the UK with Jamaica. The boys’ knowledge of the different continents, countries and climates is extremely impressive! We have continued our work on inventors during History lessons, this week the boys looked at who Thomas Edison was and learnt about his inventions.

We were also very fortunate to have a visit from an author! Clare Luther talked to the boys about her stories and what inspires her to write books. The boys were enthralled by her stories and many decided that they too would like to be an author!

To mark World Book Day, the boys dressed up as their favourite characters and shared their favourites books. As you can see below, they looked fantastic!

The boys also took on the challenge of making minibeasts out of clay, whilst still in full costume! We discussed what minibeasts are and then made our own models. They applied their understanding of key techniques such as scoring to join pieces together. The end results were superb!
