Making a splash!

Continuing our theme of measuring in maths over the last few weeks we have been learning how to estimate and measure capacity in millilitres and litres, we even learnt that Lake Superior holds around 12 trillion litres of water!  That must have taken a lot of measuring jugs to measure, glad it wasn’t me!

This week

This week in 2M’s literacy work we are looking at using speech marks as well as writing persuasively.  To help us with that we are going to have a debate about which is the more important invention, the light bulb or telephone?  In maths we continue to look at measuring length and  capacity, in science we are looking at conductors and insulators and in history we study Thomas Edison.

Inventors Quiz

For his homework Haydyn has set the class a quiz, which I have attached below.  We will be doing the quiz in class tomorrow so if you have a chance to try and learn one or two of the answers to the questions you will have a good chance of doing well.

1) Who invented the aeroplane?  (Wright Brothers)

2) Where was the Wii invented? (Japan)

3) What did Robert Fulton invent? (Sub-marine)

4) Who invented chocolate chips? (Ruth Wakefield)

5) Who invented the world wide web and when? (Tim Berners-Lee, 1991)

6) What did Richard James invent (slinky)

7) Who invented the telephone? (Alexander Graham Bell)

8) Where was the kite invented? (China)

9) Who invented the first practical light bulb? (Thomas Edison)

10) Who invented the wind shield wiper? (Mary Anderson)

Good luck!

It’s Electric!

Here are 2M experimenting with building circuits, we began by using two components (bulb and battery) before seeing if we could add extra power packs and bulbs. We also discussed what happens to the brightness of the bulb when you add or remove batteries as well as having a go at putting switches into our circuits.  There was also some troubleshooting going on with the boys trying to find what was causing bulbs not to light up, a mis-placed wire, damaged bulb or spent power pack?

Winter is coming

We took the opportunity in 2m of the weather turning colder and our mini blizzard in the week to create our own winter scenes.  We used charcoal, chalk and pastels, the affect on the page was perfect.  We also discussed which colours we should be thinking about using to make the picture feel cold, hence the blues and whites.

Welcome to Россия (Russia)

2M were treated to a wonderful presentation about Russia and Russian words in our language class this week by one of our own boys.  We learnt where it was, what the flag looked like, its population, some bits about the culture in the world biggest country as well as some words.  These included hello (privet), good (khorosho) as well as the numbers one to ten and even some colours.

We are very lucky to such expertise in our midst and would like to say a big spasibo (thank you) to Luca for our lesson.

This week…

In 2M this week we are looking at units of measures in maths focusing on length, writing newspaper reports in literacy, building circuits in science and studying Alexander Graham Bell in our history lesson.

Show and tell

P1050658 P1050659 P1050660 P1050661

Our first show and tells of the half term had a natural feel to them last Friday.  All talks were well prepared and expertly presented.  We were given insight into the world of dos and don’ts of horse riding, an account of being a zookeeper for the day as well as a homemade sun dial and a talk about fly fishing. Thank you boys, we are looking forward to the next set on Friday.
