Wild Things!

The boys have read Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak. You can listen to him reading the story by clicking on the link below

The Year 2 boys all wrote about their own ideas for a “Wild Thing”, they used some great adjectives! Maybe you could ask your son to describe their Wild Thing to you. Their writing is on display in the Pre Prep library if you would like to see it!

In Science we continued to talk about a healthy lifestyle. The boys carried out different exercises for 1 minute. They then discussed which exercises were most strenuous eg. clapping for 1 minute was easy but hopping for 1 minute was more challenging! We also introduced the terms “stamina” and immune system”. It would be interesting to see if they can remember what those terms mean!

Here are some of the boys carrying out different exercises

Making 10, 20, 100 and 1000

This week in maths the boys have been looking for different ways to make 10, 20 and then 100 or a 1000. They have made and solved addition and subtraction sums. The boys have had to draw upon last weeks partitioning work in order to solve the sums mentally. For example

55 + 20 +?

I know that 55 is made up of 50 and a 5. Therefore, 50 +20 is 70, then I add in the extra 5.

Below is the link to game game you can play at home

Please continue to practise partitioning numbers at home it is a crucial skill when solving mental maths problems.

Many thanks!

This week!

This week in Maths the boys have been partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones (units). They have all taken part in a variety of activities and have become confident at splitting different numbers apart. We have talked about 364 being 300+60+4 and then expanded this to three hundreds, six tens and 4 units. It would be great if you have chance to reinforce this at home. Below are some of the activities we used that might be helpful!

Some notices for the week –

Lochinver will betaking part in The Big Draw on Tuesday 21st October. Places for this event are limited so if you would like to take part please bring the slip back to school as soon as possible. For more information about The Big Draw you can look online using the link below

Hopefully you have received a letter about the second part of the Travelling Competition. Lots of the boys told me they had collected items over the Summer. Now they should be attached  to a decorated stick to make a “Journey Stick”. All entries need to be handed into your class teacher by Half Term.

Have a lovely weekend!

Keeping Healthy

This week in Science we were talking about how we can keep healthy! The boys had a good understanding of a “balanced diet” and knew the importance of exercise.

All the Year 2 boys went outside for 1 minute of strenuous exercise!

We noticed how the body responded to exercise-heart beats faster, get sweaty, out of breath, hot etc.

All the boys had a go at finding their pulse. Maybe they could have another go at home?

We looked at a simple diagram of the heart and they were all very surprised to learn that the heart doesn’t look anything like a “love heart”!

Working Hard!

Here are some of the activities 2M have done this week.

Team Building – 10 minutes to make a group pet using only paper, scissors, cellotape and pencils!

I hope you have a lovely weekend. See you on Monday!

Welcome Back!

2M have had a great start back to school and they have all been working very hard! Below are some of the things we have done this week for you to practise at home.

In English we have read Dogger by Shirley Hughes. We will be sequencing the story in class and writing about key events. Later on this week we will also be thinking about adjectives to describe Dogger the dog.

You can watch Shirley Hughes read Dogger here

We have also been talking about alphabetical order. The boys found it quite challenging finding different words in the dictionary. Maybe you could have a go at developing your dictionary skills at home?

In Maths we have been counting forwards and backwards in different steps. The boys used a 100 square to help them. You can download a 100 square here

http://www.primaryclassroomresources.co.uk/teaching-resources/100-squares.html

We talked about adding / taking away 10 by jumping to the number underneath / above. We even started to talk about adding 11 by jumping down to the number below and along one (partitioning 11 into a 10 and a one). Maybe you could get your son to show you how to do this?

Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting yesterday. I will make sure you have access to the notes very soon.

Enjoy the rest of the week!
